I did it, I did it, I DID IT!!!
I just ran 1 mile at a 5:56 pace (according to distance measured by both car odometer and Garmin Forerunner 305 and time measured by both G-Shock and Garmin Forerunner 305).

That's official enough for me.

I am joyous. I am elated. I have a profound sense of satisfaction.

I just accomplished something I couldn't do when I was in high school and undergraduate college, even though I was very physically fit back then. I ran a sub-6 minute mile and it was under challenging conditions. Uphill for for nearly half the distance. Wind at around 10 mph in my face for the entire uphill section and part of the flat section. I'm fighting a cold and have slight congestion. I slept 3 hours last night because T had a bad dream and R was crying in the middle of the night for some unknown reason (I stroked his back and he went back to sleep). And I have to say that the last quarter mile was the longest distance I have ever run and the last minute was the longest minute I have ever experienced. My heart rate monitor was screaming at me the last quarter mile. But...

I DID IT. I am 17 again.

(more details later when I have time to post)

It would be cool to see run in action. You can upload it to motionbased.com and let others view it. In fact, you can play back your run using the Map Player to see your pace at each spot along the way. Be sure to post the link to the url for your activity, so we can all see!!!

You are very welcome.. I get all sorts of excited when people achieve such fabulous goals like yours. Seems like my goals are always smaller and not always achieved either...but I'm still trying.. lol

The trying is the important part. Small goals are good. There's a motivational theory called the theory of "Small Wins." Essentially you set smaller and attainable goals that incrementally build to the bigger, impossible goal. That's how I tackled the mile.

my small goals seem to be revolving around what people would normally consider daily living..but after the changes I've been through this year.. accomplishing those day to day goals is rather monumental for me.. smiles..

Sometimes you have to take the time to regroup and reassess. Day to day works in those cases.

I don't mind the cooking at all.. especially as Michaela is really into cooking right now and usually lends a hand. It makes for good one on one time. Tonight however she is making dinner by herself.. simple pasta and alfredo sauce..smiles. Usually the dishes are the three of us together which is also good family time.. catch up on things etc. I've learned to adjust how I look at my chores and that helps a lot. The girls do the litter box together.. grins.. great cooperative skills there.. and Michaela is learning how to do laundry. Lauren dusts.. and passes the wet swiffer thingie.. gawd she loves that. lol They both take out the trash.. ;) It gets done...just not with enough regularity.. lol

I actually love cooking. I make 90% of the dinners, 95% of the breakfasts, and 70% of the lunches around here. I enjoy having the time to make a really savory recipe or to experiment with fresh herbs. It's just that I sometimes wear down and I don't feel creative or motivated.

Dishes, of course, are more tedious. We'll try to make them more fun as a family as the kids get older.

Your kids sound wonderful. You are doing a great job.

I used to love cooking but now it always feels so rushed..something I must do, instead of something to enjoy. It's rare to find that enjoyment in it.. so I do take note of the times when M and I are doing it together and it's not so much of a chore, but a fun moment...

I don't get to do recipes so much any more.. it's more the traditional meals that I know the girls will eat..

And yes they are very good girls.. far from perfect but very good girls.. thank you.

Rawk.

When people talk about hitting milestones like that, I always remember the bit in Bannister's book about The Day. When the announcer came over the PA and said that, "in a time that when ratified, will become a new meet, track, british, british commonwealth and World Record, in a time of th---"

And that's all he heard.

Milestones should be that way. Good on yours.

Thank you!

I never read Bannister's book. There's a relatively weak movie about Bannister that I once saw on ESPN called "Four Minutes." The character development was poor but the depth and power of his accomplishment came through anyway. I remembered the part about his last lap and I remembered the announcement on the PA. I actually used those bits for inspiration when I was reaching for my own milestone. I'll never know what it is like to set a world record and I don't have the hubris (or desire) to compare my accomplishment to his. However, I do believe I understand at some level what he experienced. I pushed myself to the limit and broke through a barrier.
